When I was first asked to review a copy of Growing Up Social, I was a little excited as it sounded like something I would really be interested in reading. When I was a child, we didn’t have the same resources as children today have. It’s a whole different world now, compared to what it used to be when I was my son’s age.

I didn’t grow up with computers and I actually didn’t get to see one or work on one until I was maybe 12-13 years old. Now kids are practically born with computers/electronic devices in their hands. If I were to ask my child what a floppy disc was or what a record was, he’d just look at me strange.

I remember being able to play outside alone and running around the neighborhood with the neighbor kids. We’d all run in and out of each other’s houses without telling our parents where we even were. We’d go out early and come back late. Now, we need to know where our children are at all times and they can’t be alone or running around on the streets or in and out of people’s houses.

I let my son use his tablet and his DS, or whatever else he may want to use, but I set limits. I like for him to play with his creative thinking toys, or to play outside when it’s nice out. We like to break away from all the electronic devices as much as possible as I don’t think it’s especially healthy for kids to live on them. I think it’s healthy for kids to use their imagination, be creative, and have fun on their own. My son loves to play outside, play with his cars and trucks, do puzzles and word games, and he loves to draw.

It’s easy to get away from the time limits of the devices and to just let children play for hours on end on them, but how do we get back to a balanced usage? How do we balance the needs of school usage and fun on these devices, while at the same time limiting them? How do we get our children to see that family time is way more fun and meaningful than hours spent on a device?

There are quite a few excuses that parents tend to use as reasons to not enforce limits (I know a few who do this). The book mentions a few common exscuses:

“Life is busy; I don’t have time to enforce screen-time rules.”
“I couldn’t get my spouse to back up what I was doing.”
“My kids threw a fit when I tried to make the change.”
“It’s so hard to be consistent.”

Dr. Chapman breaks down ways to keep your child entertained without using electronics, even for those children that are under two years old.

I was excited to be able to try the Yalmeh Super Youth Eye Cream. I love that this product has 100% Organic Aloe Vera, Vitamin E, and Vitamin C. I love that this product does not have any mineral oil, propylene glycol, or parabens. The only preservatives you’ll find in this cream are natural ones.

This eye cream is supposed to help treat and repair wrinkles as well as help with dark circles, reduce the appearance of age spots and to moisturize and soften the skin. I always mention it, but I have the worst dark eye circles, so I like to try everything I can get my hands on to see how it works for me. And moisturizing and softening my skin is always a good thing.

This cream has a nice texture and was not at all oily. I had no issues putting on my makeup afterwards and my makeup lasted all day with no issues.  I’ve been using this cream for a few weeks and have noticed my skin has been extra hydrated around my eyes and while not a drastic change to my eye circles, they don’t appear to be as bad, but it’s hard to tell. I am not sure anything can really help my undereye circles!

The puzzle pieces themselves are great quality and were very easy to put together. It was fun to watch my son put this picture puzzle together as he loved the picture (me and him) and loved watching it come together. We had a great mommy and son time putting this picture puzzle together.

I was very impressed with the quality of material used to make this picture puzzle and was impressed with the quality of the ink used for printing. This was actually a very high quality print! Most puzzles you get in the stores are so cheaply made that you can put them together a few times, and they start to peel, break or bend easily. Piczzle’s picture puzzles aren’t like that at all, they will definitely last for a very long time.

I would highly recommend anyone who wants to capture a fun or loving moment into a work of art to visit Piczzle’s website and create a puzzle from a picture. You can’t go wrong! Review:

I took 4 years of Spanish in High School and loved it. I would love to have my son learn some Spanish because I think he’d really benefit from it. I was excited to be able to try out this program with my son and to blog about how he liked it.

Speekee Spanish uses a series of videos to introduce children to Spanish through songs, puppets, and skits. Each episode also has downloads to go along with the lesson.

While we haven’t gotten through the whole series, my son has started to learn a few Spanish words that he likes to use regularly. He thinks he’s “hot stuff” because he can speak some Spanish. I find this rather amusing. He does do a good job of learning the words through this program.

I think this program would be better suited for younger children (my son is 5), and less suited for older children as the older children will most likely not like how this program looks/works. They might not like the puppetry, etc.

My son doesn’t read too much yet so the subtitles in the program were not of any use to him, but they did help me to follow along better.  He was learning to say: I like, hot, cold, hello, and a few other of the easier words.

While the program does do a good job of teaching words to children, it doesn’t seem to really teach how to use the words in sentences. This program may do that; we just might not have gotten there yet.

Overall, this program is great for the younger children and does teach them various Spanish words. The younger kids seem to really enjoy this program and how it teaches.

How to use:
